Maybe it's never closing/ending each note sent so it hits an upper limit of simultaneous voices in GB (hence stopping around 32)?Īre there any other free MIDI drum machines for ios or macbook I can try to see if it's a GarageBand specific issue? Since this happens across MacOS and iOS my theory is that the cheap Chinese drum module is somehow outputting bad/invalid MIDI data. If I plug headphones in the modules own sounds continue to play without issue (but they're crappy hence why I want to use MIDI haha). There's no way to turn the drum module's own sound off but I just don't have any headphones or amp plugged into it. That's one of the strangest parts, GB on the macbook is still getting and recording the proper midi data, it just stops making sound from its software drums. On the macbook midi events continue to get recorded properly after it goes silent, on the iPad it doesn't record anything. The garageband drums trigger properly for a bit then just fall silent. I just have them outputting to the device speakers for testing. It's the software instruments in GarageBand that stop making noise. You're right it shouldn't matter - MIDI is just simple data. Even tried both my Macbook Pro and iPad Pro with the same result! It would be a shame to be forced into the hassle of returning this otherwise decent beginner kit because GarageBand doesn't like it. I tried several USB hubs and cables to rule that out. It works fine except that after a small amount of time (or maybe exactly 32 midi events?) the software instruments in GarageBand stop making any sound! The midi events continue to come in and be recorded just fine, I can play back parts recorded during this silence and they sound perfectly normal. I'm trying to use my new cheapo electronic drums with GarageBand (Donner DED-200).

I returned the kit and bought a Simmons SD1200 instead which I'm very happy with as a budget option. That's a violation of the MIDI spec and makes software think it's "holding down" notes forever so they stop triggering once you hit their simultaneous sound limit. It only sends "Note On" events and never sends "Note Off".

The Donner kit's MIDI implementation is 100% broken and *cannot* work with any software. Edit: For anyone who stumbles across this in the future.
